With traditional dances, rodeos and bonfires, Mexicans hold a celebration of cowboy culture in the village of La Mision, just south of the US border. The two-day festival honors the area's blend of cultures throughout history, from its Kumiai indigenous roots to the founding of a Spanish mission in the village by Dominican missionaries in 1787.

One of the founders of the festivities said that "Being a vaquero [cowboy] is like being an artist, a painter, a composer," which have run annually since 1979. These festivals not only celebrate Mexican cowboy traditions but also serve as platforms for cultural exchange and community bonding between Mexico and the United States.
