Meeting on the projects: Meeting on electric power projects held

The meeting on the projects which will be jointly implemented by the Ministry of Electric Power, Ministry of Science and Technology and Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation “ROSATOM” of Russian Federation was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Electric Power, Nay Pyi Taw at 11 AM on 13th December.

The meeting was attended by the Union Minister for Electric Power U Thaung Han, Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Myo Thein Kyaw, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Dr. Aung Zayya, departmental heads, Ambassador of Russian Federation to Myanmar H.E. Mr. Nikolay Listopadov, Deputy Director General of Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation “ROSATOM” Mr. Spasskiy Nikolay and officials. In his opening remark, the Union Minister U Thaung Han said that the meeting is held for the projects which will be jointly implemented by the Ministry of Electric Power, Ministry of Science and Technology and “ROSATOM” and a result of long lasting bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The Road Map between the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Electric Power of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and The State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom of Russian Federation was signed on 6th September, 2022 during the (7th Eastern Economic Forum-EEF) held from 5th to 8th of September, 2022 in Vladivostok City of Russian Federation.

In addition, during a trip to Russian for ATOMEXPO-2022 held in Sochi of Russian Federation, the NDA to perform the feasibility study for Russian-Myanmar Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Projects was signed between the Department of Electric Power and Planning under the Ministry of Electric Power and Rusatom Energy Projects, Joint Stock Company of Russian Federation on 21st November, 2022 and the MOU on 22nd November.

The survey and discussion on the initial sites that facilitate the project feasibility study for constant acceleration to set up Small Modular Reactor have been carried out and the Terms of Reference (TOR) required for the feasibility study will be signed today. And the collaboration will be fostered by forming the working groups for the required basic data in the initial assessment for SMR and it’s believed to complete the projects within the time frame.

The representatives from ROSATOM have carried out the ground survey on the sites that can generate the electricity from wind power and small hydro-power plants in Myanmar. Especially, to generate the wind power electricity as soon as possible, as it has knowledge according to the survey to generate totaling over 8100 Megawatts in 6 good places with good prospect, the ROSATOM is requested to address the cooperation in generating wind power electricity as quickly as possible.

During the 75 years of bilateral cooperation with friendship between Russian and Myanmar, the assistances extended by Russian Federation to Myanmar is greatly appreciated and it’s expected more cooperation in the future. In his words of greeting, the Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Myo Thein Kyaw said that the productive cooperation of the experts from “ROSATOM” is expected in the dissemination of technological awareness which is important to obtain the constructive opinion of people of Myanmar and the ministry also pledges to fully cooperate with the experts of “ROSATOM”.

 Next, the Deputy Director General of Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation “ROSATOM” Mr. SpasskiyNikolay said that the Ministry of Electric Power and related ministries are thankful for the cooperation. They already have years of experiences in setting up the Small Modular Reactor.

This project will generate electric power for long period for Myanmar. It’s believed to sign the agreements regarding with the project and continue the process of cooperation. The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Myanmar H.E. Mr. Nikolay Listopadov said that the projects for longer period will be enabled to implement with the bilateral cooperation and the SMR project will operate for longer time without taking time.

Afterward, the IGA draft between the Ministry of Science and Technology represented the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and “ROSATOM” represented Russian Federation, (Terms of Reference - TOR) for initial feasibility study for SMR project between the Department of Electric Power and Planning under the Ministry of Electric Power and Rusatom Energy Project, Joint Stock Company, Joint Communication Plan for increasing public acceptance of atomic technologies in Myanmar between the Department of Atomic Energy under the Ministry of Science and Technology and Rosatom International Network were signed. Then, they posed for the documentary photo and hosted lunch, it’s learnt.
