Meeting with Local Community: Discussions on Myit Sone-Myit Nyar Hydropower Project

Chairman of the Electricity and Energy Development Commission, Union Minister at the President's Office (1) U Tin Aung San met with local people at Myitkyina University's Convocation Hall on Friday, to discuss matters relating the Ayeyawady Myit Sone-Myit Nyar project.

The meeting commenced with the performance of Kachin traditional cultural dance troupe, followed by screening of a video clip on the " Crucial Role of Hydropower in Nation's Development Efforts and Benefits of Ayeyawady Myit Sone-Myit Nyar Hydropower Project". Commission Chairman Union Minister U Tin Aung San and experts discussed the Myitsone Hydropower Project, stressing that increasing electricity production is vital for Myanmar’s economic growth.

They pointed out that hydropower is cost-effective in the long term and can also support flood control and irrigation, adding that the project’s electricity will be prioritized for domestic use. Experts assured that the dam will be designed to withstand major earthquakes and will follow safety and environmental standards.

The Union Ministers also emphasized the importance of public support and cooperation for the project’s success. During the meeting, solar power and consumer goods as well as MRTV DTH set top boxes were provided for the local residents. In the afternoon, the Union Minister and party held a meeting with Kachin State Local Committee members for supporting and cooperation for Myit Sone-Myit Nyar Hydropower Project.

The Commission Chairman stressed to ensure employment opportunities for local residents in implementing the rehabilitation works while fully benefiting from the CSR Programs. He pledged full support by the state government and related committee members and expressed thanks for cooperation of local committee members. Committee members also reported on challenges faced during fieldwork, and the Chairman coordinated necessary support.
