Employees of the local history museum in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol were attempting to recover exhibits damaged after a fire. The museum's building has been almost entirely destroyed, with many exhibits partially or completely burned.
The museum's building itself is of historical value, as it was constructed in the 19th century. The building is situated in the historical centre of Mariupol, located next to other buildings which date back to the Russian Empire.
According to museum workers, exhibits are unique, with the collection having survived World War II. Exhibits have been temporarily moved to another museum in order to carry out restoration work, and staff hopes to return all the items to the Mariupol museum once the building is rebuilt.
