Brazil's president on Thursday visited the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, which was partially destroyed by fire in 2018. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva came to see how work to restore the famed institute to its former glory was progressing.

Accompanied by Education Minister Camilo Santana, Lula was given a tour by museum director Alexander Kellner. The museum housed furniture and art belonging to the royal family, and recordings of Indigenous languages - some no longer spoken.

It also displayed specimens from rare butterflies to coral and a collection of Egyptian mummies and artifacts considered the largest in Latin America. Speaking during the visit, Santana said the government hoped to reopen the museum to the public in 2026.
