Japan's Diet passes fiscal 2026 budget

Japan's Diet has passed a record-high budget of over 122-trillion yen for the fiscal year through next March. The Upper House Budget Committee voted on a draft budget bill on Tuesday afternoon.

The vote was tied, so the bill was passed at the discretion of committee chair Fujikawa Masahito. The bill was then sent to an Upper House plenary session. It is the first time since 2015 that budget approval was delayed until after the start of the new fiscal year on April 1.
