Italy registered 853 coronavirus deaths in the last 24 hours. that is the highest in the autumn resurgence but still below the deadly peak in the spring.

The director of Italy's National Health Institute called the number "a bad figure" in the face of a slowing number of cases following containment measures, including partial lockdowns in regions most under pressure and a nationwide 10 p.m. curfew. Another 23,232 positive cases were registered on Tuesday, according to Health Ministry data. now, Italy's death toll stands at 51,306, the second-highest in Europe after Britain.

Dr. Franco Locatelli, head of Italy's national scientific council on health, said opening ski resorts "would basically mean exposing the whole country to an increase of the pandemic curve," saying ski resorts played a role in the virus spike in spring.
