International Conference : Global partnership against online scams

The International Conference on the Global Partnership against Online Scams was held in Bangkok of Thailand from 17th to 18th December. Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Aung Kyaw Kyaw attended the opening ceremony of the conference on 17th December together with the delegations from 58 countries and international organizations.

Co chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the conference was inaugurated with the opening remarks of Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Sihasak Phangketkeow.

Next, the video messages of UN Secretary General Mr. Antonio Gutteres and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mr. Voker Turk were screened. Subsequently, the Regional Representative of the UNODC for Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ms. Delphine Schantz delivered a speech.

Then, the attendees made clarifications on online scams respectively. For his side, Deputy Minister Maj-Gen Aung Kyaw Kyaw stated that the Central Supervisory Committee on Combating Telecom Fraud and Online Gambling was established on 10th December.

He pledged that Myanmar is not a source of the online fraud and, doesn’t receive any benefit and advantage from these illegal scams. Underscoring Myanmar’s strenuous efforts to expose and repatriate the online scam victims with the collaboration of relevant organizations, the Deputy Minister called for the genuine support of the international organizations to eliminate the illegal online scams.

On the 2nd day of the conference on 18th December, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand Mr. Vijavatisarabhakdi and Regional Representative of the UNODC for Southeast Asia and the Pacific made discussions on ways forward and the joint statement was approved. Myanmar delegation arrived back in Yangon on 19th December.
