In Mawlamyaing, the Yadana Tun Fish Market owned by the Mawlamyaing Township Development Committee and located between Coal Yard Road and Strand Road, sat at the end of Strand Road, one of the city’s main roads. Due to the smell, heavy water usage, and resulting damage such as pot-holes on surrounding roads, the market was relocated to an upgraded new fish market at the Mupun Extension Housing Area on 20 June.
In the morning of 13th August, Mon State Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Thein, along with members of the State Government and officials, visited the new fish market to inspect the conditions ensuring that vendors and customers could freely and peacefully engage in trade.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister explained that the old Yadana Tun Market, which sold fish, prawns, and other aquatic products on Strand Road, had caused traffic congestion, was too close to residential areas, and created sanitation and odor problems. For these reasons, the market was rebuilt and reopened as an upgraded fish market at its current location. He noted that if an ice-making plant and cold storage facility for fish could be constructed within the new large fish market, operations would become faster and more convenient, while also creating more job opportunities.
The Mon State Government is working on these plans, and that feedback and requests from vendors and buyers are being addressed in coordination with relevant officials, it’s reported.
