




17 water supply projects, including irrigation facilities which would help the sustainability of Inle Lake, are being undertaken in NyaungShwe Township of Southern Shan State.
The projects are being carried out with 130 million kyats budget allotment from the State Fund.
The Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department is trying to get convenient process of irrigation and water supply in NyaungShwe Township.
Assistant Director, Kyaw Kyaw Oo, Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department (IWUMD) said "Since it is starting to rain, we have seen water inflow into the lake.So, we are undertaking the projects for the convenient irrigation and water supply in NyaungShwe Township, both in rainy season and after rainy season. We are also cooperating with the local people for conserving the Inle Lake. As the Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department, we have 17 irrigation projects to be carried outwith the use of 130 million kyats from State fund."
The main projects are – building dams near the Inle lake, digging drainage canals, and maintaining the dams which are currently used in town.
Assistant Director, Kyaw Kyaw Oo, Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department(IWUMD) said "We don’t have big dams; however, we have several small dams. We are maintaining those ones. The processes we are doing with the State fund are mainly focused on getting water for irrigation purposes. However, some projects are targeted for getting drinking water and conserving the Inle Lake. The dams can also be used to filter the sediments which are about to enter the lake."
It is learnt that the irrigation facilities being undertaken in NyaungShwe Township not only focus on irrigation but also emphasis on conserving the Inle Lake.
