Locals in Indonesia were recovering items and rescuing livestock on Monday after an eruption from Mount Semeru in East Java province on Sunday.

The event saw thick columns of ash more than 1,500 meters spewed into the sky Sunday. Buildings were covered in volcanic ash and belongings inside were buried.

The improved weather conditions on Monday allowed rescuers to resume evacuation efforts and a search for possible victims.  Semeru’s last major eruption in December 2021 left 51 people dead in villages that were buried in layers of mud.
