India's top court ahead of same-sex marriage verdict

India’s top court declined on Tuesday to legalize same-sex marriages in the country, but said the country had a duty to acknowledge LGBTQ relationships and to protect them from discrimination.

More than a dozen petitioners from the LGBTQ community had challenged the law that doesn’t allow them to legally marry. The ruling is the culmination of a hard fought legal battle for equality in a country where homosexuality remains taboo.
