Helicopter Attacked: AA Machine-Gunned Helicopter On A Humanitarian Mission

The helicopter carrying Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Dr Win Myat Aye, who was on a humanitarian mission, was machine-gunned by AA on 19th February.  

Dr. Win Myat Aye was together with Chief Minister U Nyi Pu, and they were on their way to Kha Mway Chaung Village of Buthidaung Township, where shelling by AA on February 13 had injured seventeen young students, Immediately after the incident, officials from the Social Welfare Department and the District Commissioner of Maungdaw went to Kha Mway Chaung Village and provided necessary humanitarian and medical assistance. Dr. Win Myat Aye was making a follow-up mission when his helicopter was shot at.

Because of the adverse weather, the helicopter was flying low, and although it was hit by machine-gun fire, it managed to land in Kha Mway Chaung Village.

Dr. Win Myat Aye and party met with the fifteen young students, who were the victims of the shelling, as well as their parents, and provided the necessary humanitarian assistance. Dr Win Myat Aye and party were able to bring back to Yangon one of the students, Ma Khin May Oo who was undergoing treatment in Sittway hospital.

The attack on humanitarian mission is the latest incident in a series of indiscriminate attacks by AA, which had killed and wounded innocent civilians.
