Doctors at the Yangon Orthopaedic Hospital successfully performed a toe-to-thumb transplant surgery on a patient whose thumb had been cut. The operation was led by Professor Dr Kyaw Thu Tun and a surgical team on March 4. The patient, a 33-year-old man from Myanaung Township, lost his left thumb in an accident while repairing a harvesting machine.
After receiving initial treatment at Myanaung People's Hospital, he was transferred to Yangon General Hospital and later referred to Yangon Orthopaedic Hospital for specialized surgery.
Doctors replaced the left thumb using the patient’s right big toe in a surgery that lasted from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eight days after the operation, the transplanted thumb was reported to be functioning well. This is the second successful toe-to-thumb transplant surgery performed in Myanmar. The first was conducted in 2019 at Insein People's Hospital.
