Catholics watched a re-enactment of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday in Mexico City. The event has taken place annually since 1843 when residents thanked God for the end of a cholera epidemic and promised to stage a dramatisation of the Christ's Passion every Easter.

In another annual tradition, worshippers carry wooden crosses through the streets of the neighbourhood of Iztapalapa. Nearly 90% of the more than 100-million people who live in Mexico are Roman Catholics.
