The Myanmar Veterinary Association (MVA) kicked off its Golden Jubilee celebrations at the Yangon Convention Center on Saturday, in conjunction with the 16th Conference.

Under the theme "Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future: Myanmar Veterinarians Beyond the Golden Jubilee,"  the ceremony brought together veterinary professionals, including Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung Gyi and other invited guests.

Founded in 1974, the association marked the occasion of its 16th conference in 2024, commemorating decades of progress and dedication.

President, Myanmar Veterinary Association, Dr. Khin Zaw said "The MVA is working closely with the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department to improve veterinary treatment under the "One Health" approach. With the theme of the conference, we not only honored the contributions of past service personnel but also focused on creating a brighter future for the next generation of veterinarians. For human resource development, we’re making sure our universities, where the future of veterinary medicine starts, to meet the Southeast Asian standards. The Myanmar Veterinary Council and MVA are working together to nurture long-term growth in the field, starting with the universities by bringing together a group of 10 veterinary experts to guide the process."

The MVA is playing an active role in disease control, offering services like free contraception for stray dogs and providing free rabies vaccinations, to keep both pets and their owners safe.

Deputy Director

Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department, Dr. Moe Moe Thein said "For pet owners, disease prevention, treatment and proper nutrition are essential. This includes ensuring pets receive necessary vaccines, like the rabies vaccine, and avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use. Treatments should always be based on veterinary recommendations. A major concern in "One Health" is the overuse of antibiotics, which can lead to resistance. Therefore, it's important to be cautious with antibiotic use in pets, to prevent diseases."

During the event, one of attendees shared valuable insights, emphasizing the importance of sharing research findings at such events.

Veterinarian, Dr. Su Thapyay Naing said "We have great opportunities to share our research at events, and through these results, I believe pet owners will benefit by learning important facts they need to know, including things they should avoid. As the number of pet owners rises, so does the potential for diseases to be transmitted from pets. That’s why education and sharing information is so crucial. Pet owners need to follow the advice and instructions as best as they can, as it will really make a difference."

The ceremony also featured the presentation of the 2023-2024 financial report, paper reading session, a display of research posters and a series of exhibitions.
