Full hospitals with few COVID-19 deaths in Brazil

Hospitals are once again filing up with COVID-19 patients in Brazil as the virus Omicron variant keeps spreading. Seven states show critical situation in ICU occupancy, with six states over 80% and the Federal District with 98%. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have 62% and 66% occupancy respectively.

On Wednesday, Brazil had almost 220,000 new confirmed cases. Although the number of new daily cases in the country reached an all-time high, cities with a strong vaccination adhesion have seen a small increase in death numbers. The majority of the severe cases are the elderly, especially the elderly that don't have the complete vaccination program. In Rio de Janeiro, where nearly all of the adult population has at least two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, only 135 have died among the 200,000 cases in 2022.According to Brazil Health Secretary's Panel on COVID-19, the mortality rate among the total population has already been reduced from that of 2021.
