The Peruvian Airforce Base of Las Palmas became one of several points in the capital city of Lima on Thursday to collect blood in a pioneering campaign that seeks to supply blood banks in hospitals across the country. The innovative aspect of this crusade is that every blood donor is administered a free COVID-19 rapid test. About 30,000 lives will be saved thanks to the blood collected in this campaign that has managed to collect a total of 9,654 blood units since the beginning of the quarantine.

Each donation is capable of helping up to three adults or four minors. The number of people who come to hospitals to donate blood has been severely affected by the advance of the new coronavirus in Peru. As of Thursday, Peru had reported than over 702,000 infections and more than 30,200 deaths, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
