The French parliament has voted to ban the use of social media for children under 15. It will be the first such measure in Europe once it takes effect in September. Both chambers of France's parliament, the Senate and National Assembly, approved the legislation on Tuesday.

Social media platforms will be given another four months until January to close existing accounts. The platforms will also need to use age verification approved by the French privacy regulator. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the legislation as "a major step forward."
