Former British PM Starmer to quit parliament

Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will stand down as a member of parliament. Starmer wrote on his social media account on Tuesday that "now is the right time" to "hand the baton over to a successor."

He also said, "It is now time to step aside and focus on other issues: international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast changing world." He pledged to "tackle violence against women and girls." Starmer became leader of the Labour Party in 2020 and assumed the post of prime minister after a general election in 2024 that brought the first change of government in 14 years. A by-election will be held in his constituency in London.
