Flood Prevention Measures: Efforts to mitigate flood in Kachin State

To prevent flooding along the Ayeyawaddy River, the Kachin State Government has been carrying out flood prevention measures, including the construction of embankments, retaining walls and sluice gates.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister U Khet Htein Nan, accompanied by concerned officials, inspected the construction of Yay Kyi Creek Sluice Gate and channel management process. Initiated by 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 Kachin State Government Fund, the 8-ft wide and 8-ft tall Sluice Gate is a reinforced concrete facility project which features 7 gates.

At the briefing hall, the Chief Minister heard reports on completion status and further work implementations and fulfilled necessities. Next, the Chief Minister inspected the ongoing construction process and oversaw the construction of earthwork platform along Ayeyawaddy River.

Subsequently, the Chief Minister and party visited Sitapu sandbank clearing site, one of the major works to prevent overflow and inspected the sandbank removal and riverbank road reinforcement process. At the briefing hall, the Chief Minister gave instructions on systematic dredging works and sand and gravel transportation without causing incovenience to the surrounding and residents nearby.

Beside Yay Kyi Creek sluice gate, Injan Kha အင်ဂျန်းခ Creek sluice gate is also under construction to prevent flooding within Myitkyina Township. Moreover, retaining walls construction and Naung Tar Law secondarey channal excavation measures are being carried out to improve water flow.
