The first day commemorating the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall was marked by a string of neon lights along the River Spree, recreating the former border between East and West Berlin. The blue glow of neon rods stretches 150 metres and is accompanied by 140 flashing rescue lights - representing those who lost their lives trying to cross the border. Artwork is being project onto parts of the wall, which have become an open-air gallery. The wall stood for 28 years before it began being torn down on 9 November 1989.
