




The 7th meeting of the Fisheries Research Fund Management Committee was held at the Department of Fisheries in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday.
Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung Gyi attended the meeting and made a speech. The Deputy Minister said the fisheries sector plays an important role in providing jobs, ensuring food security and earning foreign income for the country. A fisheries research fund was established in February 2022 through cooperation between the Department of Fisheries and the Tanintharyi Region Fisheries Federation. The fund is supported by 0.3–0.5 percent of the export value of seafood products from Tanintharyi Region. From August 2022 to March 2026, the fund has received over 5.7 billion kyat, of which about 2.1 billion kyat has been used for fisheries research projects.
Officials also discussed ongoing and future research activities, including studies on aquatic animal diseases, marine resource surveys along the Tanintharyi coast using the research vessel M.V. SEAFDEC 2, and cooperation with Myeik University on marine research projects. Participants reviewed research activities carried out during 2024–2025 and discussed future plans to further develop the fisheries sector.
The Deputy Minister concluded the meeting with remarks encouraging continued research to support the growth of the fisheries industry.
