Firefighter fatally shot while responding to fire

A veteran firefighter who was shot while responding to a fire in central California early Monday has died, authorities said. The shooting happened while firefighters responded around 4:45 a.m. to a dumpster fire that spread to a building in the Central Valley city of Stockton, police said.

Fire Capt. Max Fortuna was rushed to a hospital, where he died.Fortuna, 47, had been a firefighter for more than two decades and is survived by a  wife and two adult children. Police said a suspect, a 67-year-old man, was in custody and a firearm was found at the scene.
