False reports circulated on social media claiming that civilians receiving treatment at the public hospital in Mrauk-U of Rakhine State were killed due to an attack by the Tatmadaw.
According to official information, fighting between the Tatmadaw and the AA resumed in Rakhine State from November 2023. In July 2024, AA temporarily took control of the Mrauk-U area, and government staff, doctors, and nurses had already evacuated for safety.
As a result, the public hospital was officially closed and no longer functioning as a medical facility. Reports say the AA and allied armed groups later used the hospital buildings as a military base while keeping the appearance of a hospital.
Local sources stated that the site was also used for administrative activities by these groups. Based on local information, the Tatmadaw carried out a counter-terrorism operation on December 10 against buildings being used as armed group bases.
Social media photos shared by those groups showed their own injured members being evacuated and messages mourning their dead. It is reported that those killed or injured were not civilians but members and supporters of armed groups using the site as a base, and Tatmadaw will continue counter-terrorism operations in line with rules of engagement.
