Evacuation flights continue as deadline approaches

Aircraft activity  continued at Kabul international airport on Monday as the deadline for evacuations - Aug. 31 - draws closer.  The Dutch Defence Ministry says it has completed nine flights out of Kabul to airports in the region since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan.

Six flights carrying evacuees from Afghanistan have arrived in the Netherlands carrying a total of more than 800 people.  Meanwhile, more evacuees landed in the UK from Afghanistan early Tuesday morning.  Britain is urging the United States to extend its evacuation effort in Kabul beyond the current Aug. 31 deadline.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson plans to press President Joe Biden at an emergency meeting of Group of Seven leaders on Tuesday convened by Britain. Britain says its forces have evacuated more than 5,700 people.
