European Union (EU) Foreign Policy Chief in G7 Meeting

European Union (EU) Foreign Policy Chief Josepe Borrell suggested that UNIFIL’s (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) mandate should be “reviewed” and strengthened. Borrell made remarkis at the close of morning talks at the G7 defence summit in Naples.

Josep Borrell, High Representative, European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said “If UNIFIL is patrolling and they discover a rocket, a rocket launcher of Hezbollah, what do they have to do? What they have to do is to call the Lebanese army and to warn them and ask them to go and act. But they cannot act by themselves, which is certainly a limited role. It could be considered to expand the role. But this requires a United Nations Security Council decision”.

Furthermore, Borrell reiterated his call for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cooperate on reaching a ceasefire in Lebanon.
