A European Union (EU) delegation, led by Commissioner for Equality and Crisis Management met on Friday with Syria's interim leader, vowed to provide an aid package worth 235 million euros to assist Syria and neighbouring countries.

During a press conference, the Commissioner hailed Syria's "historic transition" as an opportunity for citizens to overcome decades of conflict and despair, urging an inclusive vision for the nation's future.

The trip comes two weeks after foreign ministers from France and Germany visited, calling for a peaceful, inclusive transition, amid a diplomatic activity by countries seeking to engage with Syria's new authorities.

EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss proposals to ease some measures at a meeting in Brussels on January 27 but the Commissioner warned: "They will need unanimity to lift the sanctions".
