A coordination meeting on the Solar Powered Electricity Power Plant Projects under construction was held at the meeting hall of the office of State Administration Council on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by the Chairman of Electricity and Energy Development Commission, SAC member, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister at the office of Prime Minister Admiral Tin Aung San, SAC member, Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Foreign Exchange General Nyo Saw, Vice Chairman (1) of the Commission Union Minister for Electric Power U Nyan Tun, Deputy Ministers, departmental officials and the officials concerned from the companies implementing Solar Powered Electricity Power Plant Projects.

At the opening speech, the Chairman of the Electricity and Energy Development Commission, a member of the State Administration Council, and Union Minister for the Prime Minister’s Office, Admiral Tin Aung San, highlighted that the current electricity generation capacity of the nation includes 28 hydroelectric power plants, 27 thermal power plants, and 8 solar power plants, with a total installed capacity of 6,371 megawatts.

However, due to damage from natural disasters and the destruction of power lines, 12 of these plants are currently producing less electricity, and the demand for electricity in the country is increasing. As a result, there is a need to rapidly implement plans for renewable energy (RE) to meet the growing electricity demand.

The Head of State has directed the focused implementation of renewable energy projects. Regarding ongoing solar power plant projects, four are being constructed in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, three in Mandalay Region, one in Bago Region, and one in Shan State, with a total installed capacity of 530 megawatts. Hybrid (Gas Engine + Solar) projects are also under construction, one in Mandalay Region and another in Magway Region, with a total installed capacity of 496 megawatts. Together, these solar and hybrid projects will have a combined installed capacity of 1,026 megawatts. Efforts should be made to ensure the continued progress of these projects.

The representatives from companies working on ongoing solar power plant projects presented their work progress, challenges encountered, and future plans. Following this, members of the State Administration Council, the Chairman of Foreign Exchange Supervisory Committee, the Union Minister for Electric Power, Deputy Ministers, and relevant officials reviewed and discussed the companies’ presentations.

The Chairman of the Electricity and Energy Development Commission concluded the meeting by analyzing the situation based on the discussions, proposing recommendations, and outlining the next steps for the relevant ministries and organizations to collaborate and implement these strategies. The focus will be on increasing the nation’s electricity generation capacity to meet its growing needs. Companies were also encouraged to expedite their ongoing projects to increase electricity production swiftly.
