Construction of the 580 metres long and 22.68 metres wide four-lane Gyaing (Kawkareik) Bridge is underway, crossing over the Gyaing River from the Asian Highway No. (1) and the East-West Economic Corridor.
This Bridge construction project is being implemented under the ODA loan of JICA and the contract with the Ministry of Construction. The Bridge is designed to be an extradosed prestressed concrete one with the load capacity of 60 tonnes per vehicle.
The project started on the 3rd of May 2019 with 6.8 billion Kyats. The old Gyaing [Kawkareik] Bridge was a 36-metre-long suspension bridge constructed in 1998. As there were around 1,500 vehicles passing the bridge each day, a massive renovation was made in 2010, reducing the load capacity to 13 tonnes from 45 tonnes and making big vehicles use Pontoon Bridge. Since the Gyaing (Kawkareik) Bridge will be a bridge on the road to the Myawaddy border, Thilawa, Tamu, and Muse, upon completion, it will bring smooth transportation from Ayeyawaddy Region, Bago Region, Taninthayi Region, Mon State and Kayin State to the Myawaddy border trade point.
