Efforts for More Power: Inspection of Upper Kyaingtaung Hydropower Plant

Union Minister for Electric Power U Thaung Han made an inspection in southern Shan State. The Union Minister inspected construction of the Upper Kyaingtaung Hydropower Plant 14 miles southwest of Kyaingtaung Township.

During the inspection, first, the Union Minister heard reports on the Kyaingtaung Hydropower project and construction process.

In his response, he highlighted that electricity plays an important role for the country’s development.

Based on the availability of natural resources, the Ministry will continuously implement new projects that will produce electricity from hydroelectric power that will be economically cost-effective and have the least impact on the environment and social environment.

The Union Minister also called for efforts to complete the project within the specified time period. It’s learnt that the main dam of this hydropower plant is 1,800 feet long and 230 feet high and its full water storage capacity is 104,000 acre feet.

The project is now 72.2 % completed and set to be fully completed in 2025 March. Upon completion, the Upper Kyaingtaung Hydropower Plant will produce an annual average of 267 million kilowatt hours of electricity.
