The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and protecting the fundamental rights of citizens in a statement issued on March 15.
The commission said it was established in 2011 and strengthened with the enactment of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission Law in 2014, in line with international standards such as the Paris Principles relating to the status of national human rights institutions.
Over the past 15 years, the commission has conducted human rights education programs, translated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into Myanmar and 30 ethnic languages, and handled complaints related to alleged human rights violations. It has also inspected prisons and detention centres and submitted recommendations to relevant authorities.
The commission said it has cooperated with international organizations, encouraged Myanmar’s accession to international human rights treaties, and monitored elections from a human rights perspective. The commission stated it will continue its efforts to safeguard human rights in the country.
