A coordination meeting for planting regionally suitable shade trees along roadsides was held on April 21 at the meeting hall of the Chin State Government Office in Hakha. Chin State Chief Minister Dr. Wong Sun Htan delivered the opening speech.

In his remarks, Chief Minister Dr. Wong Sun Htan stated that climate change is a major issue facing both Myanmar and the world, and the most fundamental task to combat this challenge is tree planting. He explained that the meeting aimed to discuss methods for planting trees in areas outside of designated forests, such as in wards, along roads, and near villages. He urged those in attendance to provide practical suggestions on how to successfully carry out these planting activities.

Following this, the Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, noted that tree planting is conducted annually. He emphasized that while efforts are being made to increase the number of trees planted, equal priority must be given to their survival. He added that official reports must include not only the quantity of trees planted but also their survival rates.

Participants then engaged in discussions regarding the types of shade trees suitable for the local climate and terrain to be planted along the roadsides.

Based on the discussions, State ministers and the Secretary of the State Government provided additional suggestions. The Chief Minister then coordinated the requirements and delivered the concluding remarks, it’s reported.
