Duty-free sales grew in Golden Week compared last year

South China's island province of Hainan recorded total offshore duty-free sales of 1.33 billion yuan during the eight-day "Golden Week" holiday, according to data released by customs in the port city of Haikou on Saturday.

The local customs authority said the number of offshore duty-free sales grew by over 117 percent compared to the same period last year. Many shoppers joined the vacation consumption, up 143 percent from 2022 figures.

The last day of the holiday on 6th Oct, the offshore duty-free sales in Hainan reached 144 million yuan, 86.3 percent higher than the last day of the holiday in 2022. The duty-free policy in Hainan, which allows domestic tourists to buy products without taxation, was launched in 2011.
