Delegates attending an ongoing United Nations climate conference have expressed their dissatisfaction with the latest draft of a deal. Negotiators at the COP29 meeting in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, are trying to set a new target for financial contributions that will be used to help developing nations cope with climate change.
The draft that came out on Thursday presents two opposing options -- one that aligns with positions taken by developed countries, and another that aligns with positions taken by developing nations. The options do not outline funding goals.
They also do not mention what concrete efforts developing and other countries should make to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Prospects for an agreement remain unclear. The conference was initially scheduled to end on Friday, but it may be extended. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said it is time for countries to move from their initial positions and find areas of possible compromise.
