Boats have been damaged in New Zealand after an undersea volcano erupted in Saturday near the Pacific nation of Tonga. The tsunami threat around the Pacific from the huge eruption began to recede Sunday. In Tonga it sent tsunami waves crashing across the shore and people rushing to higher ground.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that her administration stands ready to support Tonga in the wake of a huge undersea volcanic eruption, but emphasized that the extent of damage remained unclear. The tsunami waves caused damage to boats as far away as New Zealand and Santa Cruz, California, but did not appear to cause any widespread damage.
