Crews, volunteers battle wildfires in northern Italy

Wildfires raged near residential areas surrounding northern Italy's Lake Maggiore on Saturday. Footage showed Canadair type planes pouring water on a large forest fires to prevent the flames from reaching the towns of San Bernardino Verbano and Angera.

Firefighters and volunteers worked together on the ground to prevent the fire from reaching nearby National Park of Valgrande. Residents were evacuated and several drones were used to monitor the fire from above.

The cause of the wildfires was not immediately clear on Saturday. However, the area had reportedly experienced a long period of persistent drought during the last months.
