A coordination meeting on upgrading Aung San Stadium in Mingala Taungnyunt Township of Yangon Region was held at the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday.

Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs and Hotels and Tourism Jeng Phang Naw Taung, who is also Chairman of the Myanmar Olympic Committee chaired the meeting and made opening remarks. The meeting discussed the current progress, remaining tasks, and future plans.

The Union Minister stressed the importance of building the new stadium to international standards, ensuring quality control, and making it resistant to earthquakes and natural disasters. He also highlighted the role of sports in national development and called for cooperation to successfully complete the project. Aung San Stadium, originally built in 1906 and formerly known as BAA (Burma Athletic Association Ground), is a historic sports venue in Yangon.

It has hosted many local and international events, including the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in 1961 and 1969. Due to its age and about 70 percent structural damage, experts recommended building a new modern stadium with a running track. The project will be implemented with assistance from the People’s Republic of China, following a bilateral agreement and guidance from the State leadership.
