China-Myanmar Cooperation: Gas-fired Combined Cycle Power Station opened

Opening ceremony of the gas-fired combined cycle power station in Kyaukphyu Township of Rakhine State took place on Monday.

There, in his remarks, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Chen Hai said the China-Myanmar economy and trade cooperation receives the proper compatibility and it supports the Belt and Road Initiative and building the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.

China also pledged to expand the cooperation work in Myanmar's basic infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing and financial sectors, and now the Kyaukpyu power plant is operational as a success of the bilateral cooperation in the power sector.

The key role of the power plant in supporting the economy and social status of locals as Kyaukpyu is located in a major place for the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and further cooperation in all sectors of Myanmar.

Also, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Dr. Aung Zeya stressed that this 135-MW Kyaukphyu Gas-fired Combined Cycle Power Station project can generate 1,000 million kW hours of power per year by using 22 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to meet the country's power need.

It recycles the waste heat and uses seawater instead of underground water like natural environmental conservation techniques.  The power will be distributed via the 230-MW Kyaukpyu sub-power station to houses, businesses, industries and power systems in Rakhine State. And, Chairman of the Power China Resources Ltd explained the projects via videoconferencing and expressed words of thanks.

Deputy Minister Dr. Aung Zeya, Rakhine State Natural Resources Minister U Than Tun, Chinese Ambassador Mr. Chen Hai and officials of the Power China Resources Ltd and Kyaukphyu Electric Power Co Ltd ceremonially opened the plant. After the opening ceremony, Myanmar officials met the Chinese ambassador for an informal meeting to discuss cooperation work in the power and energy sectors.
