


Fraudsters running cyberscam operations in Cambodia could face life in prison after the Senate approved a new law targeting criminals involved in the multibillion-dollar illicit industry. This law has two key goals. First, it will make sure the efficiency of the crackdown on online scams and support the current nationwide campaign to eliminate it.
Second, it will help in making sure that cyber scams on such a scale will not return to Cambodia after the campaign, Cambodian justice minister Koeut Rith told a news conference. He added that the individuals who organize or direct a cyber scam centre shall be jailed between five to 10 years and fined between five hundred million riels to one billion riels. The sentence could be increased to between 15 to 30 years or to life imprisonment.
