The state of California will maintain a mask mandate in schools at least through February 28, although some requirements outside of schools will be relaxed. California Department of Health and Human Services Director Dr. Mark Ghaly says that even if the state lifts mask mandates for schools, local districts may decide to keep them in place.

"It's going to be about a composite look, things like cases, things like hospitalizations, vaccination rates," he said. Outside of the school, California will no longer require, but will continue to strongly recommended, that vaccinated people wear a mask in public places. People who are not vaccinated will still be required to wear masks in public places.
