Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Tuesday held talks in Brasilia with governors and mayors to discuss safety measures for schools, amid a series of fatal attacks and online threats. The federal government announced around $600 million in investments for schools, not only to reinforce security and infrastructure, but also to treat the mental health of students and train teachers.
The federal government’s plan to implement change and increase investment to prevent attacks in schools began on April 5, after a man invaded a daycare in Blumenau and killed four children. Not long before, in March, a 13-year-old student in São Paulo fatally stabbed a 71-year-old teacher and wounded three teachers and two fellow students in a knife attack at a public school.
Authorities highlighted the need to discuss the regulation of social media and content available with no restrictions for kids and teenagers.
