Bolivia’s self-declared interim president, Jeanine Anez, formalized a law calling on Sunday for new elections to replace ousted leader Evo Morales and choose a new Legislative Assembly.
The measure promulgated by Anez doesn’t set a date for the new vote as that will be up to a new electoral tribunal. The law and the exclusion of Morales are seen as key steps toward pacifying a nation rocked by unrest since the 20 October elections which were marred by reported irregularities. Morales' claim of victory and a fourth term in the election prompted massive protests that led him to resign on 10 November at the army's suggestion. Officials of the interim government say they plan to charge Morales with sedition and terrorism.
