

Yangon Region Transport Authority (YRTA) held a media briefing at its Head-office in Yangon, Wednesday.
This is the fourth time in this year, headed by YRTA and Yangon Bas Operation (YBO). The YRTA Joint Secretary explained the matters faced by public transportation in the city and responded the queries of media persons.
Joint Secretary, YRTA, Hla Aung said “We believe that better transportation can reduce traffic congestion by applying the method on using less private cars on roads. That’s why, we are using Intelligent Transition System (ITS) to control the bus operating system and also plans are underway to issue smart cards for all YBS drivers.”
YRTA is handling the public transportation in Yangon with the instruction of Regional Government and Union Government. A total of 4,400 buses are running a day and used by over 1.8 million commuters. Aside from public bus services, the school buses are also in the list of YRTA’s tasks.
Managing Director, YBO, Aung Nyi Nyi Maw said “YRTA is now making efforts to issue smart cards for the students who take school ferry for secured transport from home to school. On the other hand, a total of 55 forms were sold out as of last week to those who are willing to buy cars for running school ferry. Altogether 92 school buses for 12 schools are put into service and transporting over 1,800 students this academic year. Aside from these 12 schools, more schools are in request to run school ferry.”
To ensure people know all updates about public transportation, YRTA assured that they are going to organize media briefing twice a month, every Wednesday of first and last week.
