Australians hold events to mark Australia Day

People in Australia marked Australia Day on Wednesday with events and ceremonies held across the country. Australia Day recognizes the day the British navy arrived with convict ships and raised a flag signaling their intent to found a British colony. In Sydney, a traditional dawn indigenous ceremony was held close to the Harbour Bridge.

The traditional 'ferrython' was also held in the harbour, with spectators watching on as boats raced around a course in the habour. A ceremony was also held in the capital, Canberra, where Prime Minister Scott Morrison gave a speech.
