






A ceremony to honour the victorious athletes at the 20th ASEAN University Games was held in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday.
Vice Chairman of the State Administration Council Deputy Prime Minister Vice Senior General Soe Win in his capacity as the Chairman of the Education, Health and Human Resource Development Committee, attended the ceremony and made a speech.
The Vice Senior General said success has been achieved due to the strenuous efforts of the student athletes to promote the prestige of the nation.
The Government is making systematic arrangements for development of sports sector to meet the international standard. He stressed that sports sector has to be promoted in cooperation with the education sector to turn out the outstanding youths with well discipline and physical fitness.
He continued that training for physical teachers have been conducted in the respective regions and states in cooperation with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, and B.Sc (Sports) degree is also conducting in Dagon and Yadanapon Universities.
Moreover, sports instructors and physical teachers are appointed at the universities and schools. The Vice Senior General also stressed to extend the school nutrition program in cooperation with the Ministry of Health.
Union Minister for Education Dr Nyunt Pe later explained the competing at the ASEAN University Games. 33 student athletes participated in 4 types of sports at the 20th ASEAN University Games, and Myanmar team grabbed 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Each participant was provided with 200,000 kyats and 200 US dollars by the Prime Minister while 100,000 kyats and 100 dollars each for the coach.
The winning athletes were awarded with 7.5 million kyats for gold medal, 5 million kyats for silver and 2.5 million kyats for bronze medal.
For the football team who won bronze medal, each player will be awarded 1 million kyats. Moreover, 2 million kyats each of cash award were presented the coach and manager for gold medal, 1.5 million kyats each for silver and 1 million kyats each for bronze medal, altogether 55.5 million kyats.
