More than 5,000 demonstrators marched to the US Embassy in the Greek capital, Athens, on Saturday in protest against the visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Individuals participating in the protest, organised by the communist-backed labour union, burned a US and NATO flag outside the embassy and chanted slogans before leaving.

During his visit to Greece, Pompeo and Greece's foreign minister signed a revised defence cooperation pact, which US officials described as critical to responding to new security challenges in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

The deal provides for increasing joint US-Greece and NATO activity at Larissa, Stefanovikio, and Alexandroupoli as well as infrastructure and other improvements at Souda Bay naval base. Protesters expressed opposition to the presence of US bases in Greece.
