A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck south-central Panama on Friday afternoon, causing widespread shaking, structural damage, and countrywide evacuations. The shaking collapsed a hostel, a historic cathedral spire in Penonomé, and several roads.

Tremors were strongly felt 120 miles away in Panama City, where skyscrapers swayed, prompting thousands to flee into the streets.  The Panama Canal Authority confirmed that operations along the vital shipping route remain completely unaffected and normal. Tsunami warnings were briefly issued for neighboring Pacific coastlines but were quickly lifted.
