66-million-year-old marine fossil discovered in Ankara

An important discovery has shed new light on Ankara’s geological and archaeological past. A 66-million-year-old marine fossil was found at the Külhöyük excavation site in Ankara’.

The fossil was identified as belonging to a gastropod, a class of animals that includes snails and slugs. Researchers say it belonged to a marine creature that lived along the shores of the Tethys Sea, which once covered parts of present-day Central Anatolia, including the Ankara region. The discovery provides further evidence that the area was once covered by a sea millions of years ago.
