Road closed and damaged due to heavy rains in the Galapagos Islands

The Baltra Highway, the main road on Santa Cruz Island in Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, has been severely damaged by heavy rainfall. Repair work is underway on the electrical infrastructure to restore power to these areas, and the national police are directing traffic to allow the work to proceed.

Heavy rains in the Galapagos Islands killed at least one person and displaced thousands of families in the region, local authorities said on Saturday. The rainfall, thought to be associated with the El Nino phenomenon, began Friday afternoon.
